Her plan is straightforward—ban AI “companions” for minors, force bot creators to identify their work as artificial, and (here’s the kicker) attach criminal penalties for anyone designing AI that nudges kids toward harm or violence.

Even swing state independents—so often torn on the big questions—line up behind the idea that the White House should move, Congress or not.

It’s not lost on Republican strategists that pushing this issue could bolster their support—especially among suburban parents who don’t often feel heard. Yet the smart money is on focusing tightly on the immediate task: pass targeted protections for kids online, and leave the sprawling debates about AI and copyright or labor for another day. Political capital, after all, is fleeting.

But deep mistrust lingers, especially when Big Tech is involved. As Britt points out, the industry has a history—first with social media, and now with AI systems—of prioritizing shareholder value over public wellbeing. Her argument isn’t just for shiny new laws, but for dismantling the invisible shields that protect platforms from lawsuits—think Section 230, long the bane of reformers seeking accountability.

Perhaps the most striking thing about this debate is how the public has gotten well ahead of its elected representatives.
